Why is it you can't lose weight?

i gained 60 lb during pregnancy, lost 20 lb immediately after delivery and nothing at all in the following 1 month even though i am nursing my baby. is this normal? i am now almost 5 weeks post-partum and need to know whether i will ever be able to lose all those extra pounds. when should i begin to expect any weight loss? i hear from a lot of people that weight loss begins slowly after the first week following delivery. i have lost nothing!! please help.

I completely feel where you are coming from as I gained 64lbs during my pregnancy last year. My doctor said she expected a 40-45lb weight gain based on my pre-pregnancy size (oh how I miss being 115 lbs…haha), but during the last few months of my pregnancy I had some serious water retention and started to resemble the pillsbury dough boy! It sucked, but I was eating healthy and didn’t have any health concerns like preeclamsia or gestational diabetes, my body just decided it wanted to keep all that water weight.

Anyways…. My little guy just turned 5 months old last week and I still have the last 21lbs to lose. When I came home from the hospital after having a c-section, I had only lost 3lbs total (baby was just shy of 8lbs, not to mention the other stuff, but lucky me I swelled even worse after the surgery). Like you, the first 20-25lbs came off during the first 6 weeks, then it’s been slow and steady ever since. I may only lose 1-2lbs in a month, but I notice that it does keep coming off. I’ve lost 43lbs total in 5 months and hope to lose at least another 10lbs by the end of the summer. I currently weigh 136lbs and I’m 5′6″. Keep in mind that the only thing I’ve done since having my baby is take care of him and not eat horribly…. however we don’t always eat healthy either (the McDonalds breakfast for example was awesome this weekend!!). I haven’t exercised at all….we’ve taken a couple of walks over the 5 month period, but not very many…I had a winter baby and we had a long winter here!! I went back to work at 8 weeks post partum and eat the same as I did before pregnancy. Keep in mind that not all the baby weight is necessarily a bad thing….. my goal is not to be the same weight, but to fit back into my original clothing….. about 1/3 of my pre-baby wardrobe fits just fine already, and a few weeks ago I even fit into a few pairs of my size 3 jeans (although they still look horrible…dangit they were on and buttoned and zipped and I was proud!! haha).

Just give it time, make sure you aren’t eating a horribly unhealthy diet, enjoy your little one, and if you feel like it….exercise. A great way to incorporate some exercise is to take your little one shopping….. all that walking at a mall is great for you and you can treat yourself and your baby to something special while you are there!!

EDIT: WooHoo!! Somehow another 2lbs has disappeared over the past few days randomly, making my weight loss total officially come to 45lbs with only 19 left to go…..Good luck new mommy…. don’t get discouraged because eventually it WILL come off!! =o)
